L&Q Befriending Service
London & Quadrant funded a 1 year pilot service to support to L & Q residents in Bexley who may be particularly vulnerable to social isolation or loneliness owing to loss of friends and family, mobility or income. The service was extended by ourselves to L & Q residents living in the Royal Borough of Greenwich from February 2017.
The funding from L & Q came to an end on 30 June but we are pleased to report that current users of the service have migrated into our generic befriending service. We are keen to continue our links with L & Q and receive any referrals from L & Q case managers/community officers relating to their residents.
We know that isolation can have a negative effect on individuals: doubling the risk of dementia, tripling the risk of heart conditions and having an effect on mortality. The focus of the pilot was to support older people(L & Q tenants) on low incomes, carers, BME groups, individuals experiencing poor mental health and those with limiting conditions.
Our service creates an environment where people can connect and be socially engaged with their neighbours, communities or people with similar interests and have positive outcomes of reducing social isolation, improve inequality and increase residents health and well-being by giving them greater choice and control over their lives, increasing their independence and enabling them to participate equally in society.
